COMBATCOVID Consortium (Consortium for Multisite Biomedical Analytics and Trials on COVID-19)

Mission

The mission of COMBATCOVID is to go beyond data sharing by also sharing IT, clinical, and data science expertise, by exchanging methods and tools, and taking collective action through multi-site studies, to understand, predict, prevent and treat acute COVID-19 and post-acute COVID-19 syndrome.

COMBATCOVID brings together EHR data experts, data scientists, and clinicians from medical institutions nationwide that aim to collaboratively utilize big data to produce knowledge and innovative approaches to combating COVID-19 and its sequelae. The database is a limited database containing information for inpatients and outpatients with or at risk for COVID-19 across all participating institutions. The database structure follows the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM), which facilitates sharing with its partners.

Opportunities

The COMBATCOVID consortium has established a central database using data extracted from participating institutions’ EHR data and mapped to a common standard. Local variations in patient data present obstacles to achieving a shared understanding of the meanings of data elements. COMBATCOVID supports a collaborative process for sharing database queries and mappings, working towards a consensus comprehension of data semantics. Similarly, predictive models are typically developed using local data, and generalize poorly across sites. COMBATCOVID supports a collaborative process for sharing predictive models, working towards the reproducibility of such tools for decision support and other clinical applications.

In the long term, this effort can have an impact beyond COVID-19; participating institutions can continue to collaborate, building on this technical infrastructure and governance model to address future clinical challenges.
